Preparing for Ear Wax Removal

To make the removal of wax easier, it is recommended you apply a few drops of olive oil or Sodium Bicarbonate Spray. The drops must contain olive oil to soften the ear wax.

Warm the drops to room temperature before use. Lie on your side with the affected ear uppermost for at least 15 minutes. Put 2 to 3 drops of olive oil in your ear. Repeat twice a day for 3 to 5 days. 

If you wear a hearing aid, apply the ear drops/spray on alternate nights for 6 nights and every night for bilateral hearing aids, alternating between the left and right ear.

Avoid using cotton buds or ear candles. If you have repeated problems with wax blocking your ears, you can use olive oil drops twice a week.

After Care

• Do not put hearing aids back in for 3 hours following treatment.
• Keep ears dry in shower for 3 days – use ear plugs.
• Advice is not to swim for 7 days, but ear plugs can be used.
